SoundLAB & Groove Beest

The joint Education Department of the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ and BIMHUIS develops programs that focus on experiencing the joy of music and experimenting with new sounds. They have created two distinctive program lines: Groove Beest and SoundLAB. With this project, the organizations aim to bring these two program lines to other locations across the country.

In SoundLAB, participants discover their musical talents and, using electronic instruments, create a brand-new piece of music. They do this with a unique, contemporary set of instruments—electronic tools specially developed for SoundLAB by sound artists. Through exploration and design, participants learn to collaborate, listen, and enjoy making music together.

Groove Beest consists of concerts by energetic young bands where schools and families can discover their own groove. The young bands also gain valuable experience performing for a young audience. The format stands out for its fresh sound in music education, jazz, and improvisation, as well as for its classroom workshops, encounters with real musicians, and the realization that groove lives in everyone!
The education department of Muziekgebouw/BIMHUIS aims to roll out these proven programs at a minimum of four other venues, so that even more children across the Netherlands can experience the joy of making music together.
